The Best of Cool-Climate Australia
The Best of WA’s Great Southern!
It doesn’t get any more historic in Western Australia than Forest Hill, who arguably planted the first modern wines south of Perth … potentially before Vasse Felix. No matter what, Forest Hill has become the country’s top Riesling and cool-climate Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz. These wines are stunning, will age for years’ to come and yet are elegant and perfect to drink right now? Don’t believe me, try the 2020 Cab Sav and the 2008 to see how these wines age gracefully!
In the late 1970’s, James Halliday wrote that the Cabernets and Rieslings from Forest Hill were his personal choice in the Mount Barker area and were of world class, although difficult to obtain. Later he was to choose a 1980 and a 1979 Forest Hill Cabernet for first and second respectively in a national survey for “The National Times.” Another milestone for Forest Hill was the first shipment of Western Australian grapes sent to the Eastern States for processing into wines boosting recognition of the Mount Barker region.

Intense vibrant purple hues. Lifted aromas of spice particularly black pepper and fennel seed, olive tapenade and florals. Palate is packed with blackberry and spiced plum flavours. Silky tannins and intense persistence.
Lifted aromas of blue fruits with florals and classic Mount Barker spice. Medium bodied but dense with fine ripe tannin and well balanced natural acidity.
Gold & Trophy – Royal Perth Wine Awards
Lots going on here: flinty mineral notes, soft, just-ripe stone fruits, green apple acidity, a touch of sake-like umami, great intensity and supple texture with some chalky pucker. A roll call of success right there. Delicious drinking, effortless too, a kind of understatement despite the detail. It feels fancy in its relaxed way.
