Stolpman Among Best of Santa Barbara
On Sunday at the Grape Escape we poured Stolpman Vineyard’s La Cuadrilla and it was a huge hit. Their whole portfolio is definitely worth checking out as these wines punch well above their price points. Elegance and pure fruit, Stolpman continues to show the world how amazing American wines can be!
Stolpman Vineyards’ story is reminiscent of the early pioneers of American winegrowing; they started with a dream of cultivating the land with their family and producing world class wine. Since then, their family has grown to include a full-time staff of over 30 people and their grapes have brought Ballard Canyon AVA to the forefront of California Syrah and beyond.
To be clear, there really isn’t a linear, singular Stolpman story here – rather, there are what feels like dozens of important and pivotal stories that come together to make Stolpman, Stolpman. To preview, Peter’s father, Tom Stolpman, didn’t just happen upon limestone-laden vineyards in Santa Barbara County, he sought them out, specifically (see our first question below). The vineyard was founded in 1988, but Ballard Canyon didn’t become a proper AVA of its own until 2013, due in part because of Stolpman. There’s Ruben, an actual ‘Grape Whisperer’ and the keeper of these vineyards since 1994, who seems to have infinite knowledge of the vines that he works with (see our fifth question). We could go on, and on, and on, and on…
There are the traditional Estate Syrahs (of which we have library vintages), the traditional La Cuadrilla and Para Maria, whereby all profits go to the vineyard staff and the So Fresh series of unique, natural wines with character and precision. Check out the new wines and the new vintages of the wines you've grown to love!
Cherry Cherry Cherry -- spanning from hard candy to bright Rainier - into bright, banging Pomegranate. Savory Trousseau tea leaves back the pure red fruit and Gamay lends depth and crunch. A citrus spray layer of energy rides above the fruit profile and bonds the three varietals under its high-toned webbing. Youthful tartness and a tannin back-board structure the wine to create something more serious than just a delicious day-time masher.
A popping, lively, super-fresh nose and palate combines red fruits and firm boysenberry with a thick coat of riper yumminess. Rolling along with the fruit are fat green Castelvetrano olives giving girth around a crackling lightning-bolt crunchiness. The finish turns ultrafine with tannins not coming into play, but instead a smooth, succulent dryness made playfully romantic by lingering red fruits still singing a high note.
Blend: 95% Syrah, 5% Viognier
A breadth of fruit on the nose spans from bright red to black plum. The body comes off deep and coating with fine chalky tannins on the finish. Fresh black plum sings above the rich density. The wine has the energy to stand up to our favourite Jaliscan Pastor and it is full-bodied enough to compliment any other protein. 70% Syrah, 15% Grenache, 15% Sangiovese. RP 92
These wines are absolutely stunning, show the ability to age and produce high-end wine that shows the ability to age gracefully. A unique opportunity to see how this vineyard and its wines develop. Elegant, with pure red and dark fruits that jump out on the nose, followed with floral notes and a soft tannic backbone that makes this wine one of the best new world Syrah's out there. Alcohol is managed perfectly at 14.1 percent. RP 95 WE 95
Popping the cork, the nose screams of dark, brooding Syrah – a slam dunk in a blind tasting. Telltale blood and tar further seal the deal. The wine quickly opens up, dominated by delicate red fruits that pierce and crackle – bordering on peppermint, and ride high over a tantalising fleshiness that has already completely enveloped tannins, even upon release. Honeysuckle balanced by exotic tropical fruit and tangerine citrus. The palate has a nice roundness and is balanced with a floral hop component that lifts the finish. A balanced and refreshing wine, this is perfect for any sushi or sashimi menu as its Meyer lemon is perfect acidity for fish dishes. 70% Roussanne 30% Chardonnay
Serve cold! The long carbonic Sangiovese harvest led to a wine that delivers in immediate approachability. The typical Love You Bunches pizzazz of fresh red berry fruit and cherries that we all adore give way to lychee and pomegranate. Rico Suave! Darker notes of plum and pluot accompanied by signature tartness and lingering acidity.
This extremely affordable blend of 80% Syrah and 20% Petit Verdot always impresses. Expertly captured aromas of berry juice, pepper and thyme are savoury yet soft on the nose. The palate is tense in structure but ripe in fleshy dark-red-fruit flavours, all elevated by cracked pepper and lavender touches. 80%Syrah 20%Petit Verdot. WE 94

A haunting blue-black abyss kissed with a spark of fiery crimson and wild bloodiness. From the gorgeous 2018 vintage, no shocker that the debut vintage of THE GREAT PLACES Ruben Solorzano Syrah is more hedonistic than any of the 10 previous Ruben’s Block wines. Despite the plush, full-body of the wine is, it is also polished into a harmonious package. RP 95 WE 95
The Pinot Gris and Orange Muscat co-ferment provides a reddish orange tint while the Gewurztraminer brings a pink peach tone. The Semillon adds a bright yellow tint to bring the final blend back to an orange hue. Pinot Gris lends savoury rich layers, while the Gewurztraminer brings ripe aromatic aromas and feathery mid-palate stuffing. The tropical orange muscat becomes integrated into the Gewurztraminer while the Semillon brings the finish of the wine to a high-acid crunch. Overall the wine shows firm, quenching citrus fruit with loads of mashable, mouth-filling tactile yumminess.
