Amazing Cool Climate Australia Pinot Noir
We just spent some great time in Australia & New Zealand and had the great opportunity to drink many great wines, including some of the Pinot Noir that we find in our own portfolio. Australia for Pinot Noir can be quite misunderstood with the big, bold, extracted Shiraz from Barossa Valley. But Aussie Pinot is quite Burgundian in style and I firmly believe we need to start drinking more of this grape from Australia, as it is among the best in the world. And they age beautifully!
Below is a list of my favourite Pinot Noir and Pinot-based blends that are drinking absolutely great right now. These have to be at the top of your “to drink” list. If they are not, then you are missing out on some of the best reds our portfolio has to offer.

A seductive perfumed nose of black cherry, strawberry, earthy and slightly smoky with a background touch of truffle like characters. The palate is medium-bodied with red berries, tobacco leaf and forest floor. Combined with firm, fine and grainy tannins reaches effortlessly to a long finish. It has the structure and poise to handle further aging.
A bright ruby colour to the wine, with fresh strawberries, cherry and a delicate savoury spice on the finish. The palate is fresh, vibrant and generous. The structure relies on the bright acidity more than the tannins, keeping the wine aromatic, easy drinking and balanced. The wine finishes with an attractive subtle smokiness from the oak which compliments the lovely varietal fruit.
Red fruits, strawberries and cream notes, savoury edge underlying it though from the 10% whole bunch.
This vintage was picked over a week which gives a lot more variations in fruit flavours. The winery lost half the crop to wasps and found a dead snake caught in the net ( hence the label).
This Pinot Noir has undergone whole-berry ‘carbonic’ fermentation which highlights the fresh red fruit profile in the wine. Underpinned by a soft touch of spice from old oak barrels, this is a juicy and soft, easy-going Pinot, perfect for light-lunches, lazy Sundays and weekday evenings.
Pinot Noir & Gamay make for great bedfellows. This version by Mac Forbes and team is as fresh as a daisy. A little bit of whole-bunch, a little time in concrete, bottle young and bright. It’s a light, juicy, could-be-bloody-brilliant-with-a-chill red that’s perfect for knocking back in tumblers as the sun goes down.
This is more on the lighter side of Pinot; herbal, incredibly aromatic and refreshing. It's just what you'd expect from a Mac Forbes Pinot - utterly moreish, richly aromatic and deliciously precise. Sitting at the southern end of the Yarra below Yarra Junction in the valley running north-south down to Gippsland.
This wine is bright ruby and that brightness is mirrored in the sweet perfume of strawberries, orange peal, cocoa and green tea. It’s reminiscent of Italian bitters. The medium bodied palate is big in fruit and has an attractive slipperiness in the mouth before the acid and gentle tannins engage leaving the finish dry. There are flavours of rockmelon and cherries with warmed spice and roasted sesame. It’s a very moreish wine and the bottle tends to empty quickly. This is one for immediate enjoyment.
