CASA EMMA

Chianti, Italy

Casa Emma is an Estate located in the heart of Tuscany and owned by Bucalossi family. In 1969, Fiorella Lepri bought the Estate from the Florentine noble woman: Emma Bizzarri. For this reason, the Estate has been named “Casa Emma.” Composed of 28 ha of vineyards, the estate is certified organic farm, and they are fully sustainable and “collaborate” with 80 geese who call the Vignalparco vineyard home annually during their migration south, help reduce the environmental impact of winemaking.

In addition to the function of soil fertilisation, the geese work very well on grass control among the rows, and in the control of insects harmful for the vine; in fact, the geese feed both grass and insects with a capacity to ingestion of these last during all hours of the day. With the insertion of the geese, we have reduced for the 80% the passageways of tractors and other mechanical vehicles, reducing them to the minimum for only phytosanitary treatments as strictly necessary. In doing this, we have solved the problem of soil compaction of this vineyard which was particularly stressed in the past.Since 2015 no tractors and mechanical vehicles has entered in this vineyard anymore, and we have seen that the roots of the Vignalparco Sangiovese have the opportunity to better explore the soil in search of nutrients and lead to an excellent ripening of the grapes from the phenolic structure.
